Why We No Longer A Fan of Carrie Bradshaw

Carrie Bradshaw. Samantha Jones. Manolo Blahnik shoes. Pink tutu skirt. The newspaper printed dress.

Like most of you, I religiously watched Sex and The CIty too and worshipped Carrie Bradshaw like she was the person you would like to be in the future. I thought her choices of guys are the best (he always got the good looking guys!). I wanted her walk-in closet, that one has been to die for! Back then, she looked very cool, lived on her own in the big apple city, making money by writing (writing only!), and frequently had night outs with the ladies (she didn’t seem like someone who needed to worry about money that much, hmm..)

We were in our 20s when the show hit the tv screen. Carrie and her BFFs were strong-willed women, opinionated, career-driven, but like us (me, probably, because one of us is married & you may guess who’s who) they were not that lucky in love. They fell in and out of love, hoping the next time they fell in love things would get better, or it would be the happily ever after (well, except for Samantha). And, their way to the happily ever after just that bumpy, windy, zig-zagging, just like us. No wonder we felt that they were the embodiment of ourselves in the future, in our 30’s.

WERE.

We’re so over with our soapy 20’s period. Even our 30’s. We both moved on from SATC, none of us owned a pair of Manolo Blahnik like Carrie (we both use sneakers now on a daily basis), had switched careers (one of us stays with numbers though), and.. when we were on our video call last week, suddenly we chatted about SATC, and most particularly, Carrie Bradshaw. We dreamt to be writers yet we are now writing just to have some distraction from our reality, and to laugh at ourselves. How we see Carrie Bradshaw right now proved to us that we have changed that much. And how naive we were.

We hate Carrie Bradshaw.

The “present” us, is hating our past “muse” and here’s why:

She is not a good friend.

She managed to make all things that happened around her, including what happened to her friends to be her own problems. Miranda was thinking about her pregnancy and she made it to make it about her own issue whether she wanted a child or not. When Miranda broke her neck and called her for help, she sent her boyfriend to help her. And at some point, she slut-shamed Samantha (I was not okay with this, at all, even at that moment). What kind of best friend are you Carrie?

The way she treated Aidan.

Oh yeah, many of you probably agree with us on this one. Aidan is like someone sent from heaven! A mature, loving, and caring man who just wanted to make her happy. But she didn’t want it. She wanted the drama, the chase, the jealousy like she got from Big. And the worse, she cheated on Aidan with none other, Big! I mean, if you want to cheat because you’re not sure, at least with someone who is even better than Aidan, right?

Her dislike for technology is just stupid.

I mean, Carrie Bradshaw was supposed to represent the modern progressive women of the 21st century. Even if she’s not tech-savvy, she should be able to make a phone call with a touch smartphone, right? I mean, she used a Macbook to write!

Her lifestyle is actually not applicable (unless you marry a millionaire)

She was just a columnist writer but able to hang out every weekend with her friends and bought new expensive shoes every month. Unless you have a rich boyfriend or husband, nobody can manage that kind of lifestyle, in NEW YORK! We understand that it’s just a movie, but it sold lots of dreams for the 20s women, thinking that they can score that lifestyle too!

She’s conventional when it comes to gender.

When she dated a guy who was once with a man, she said that bisexual is just transit to gay town. For a character that was supposed to be strong-willed, open and progressive, that’s not a progressive comment my dear. There was inconsistency in her perspective on LGBT and we don’t quite get it, Carrie.

Overall, she doesn’t know what she wants, the entire time.

She didn’t. Why did it take so many years for us to know that she didn't know what she wanted for herself? And after she got married to Big, she was still confused when she bumped into Aidan, after all those years and the mess she caused. And for all (ex) Carrie admirers, please, don’t do this at home, in real life.

" Can a relationship bring you back to life?"

No, Carrie. Just no.
